Martin County names May, “Historical Preservation Month,” in South Florida!

In a press release published online by the good folks at the Martin County General Services Department, “(the) Martin County Commission recognized May as Historic Preservation Month during its April 25 meeting.”

The Martin County Board of County Commissioners proclaimed May as Historic Preservation Month in Martin County.  “In recognizing Historic Preservation Month, we acknowledge the important role that historic preservation plays in our lives in Martin County,” said Board Chair and District 1 Commissioner Doug Smith.  “The events that have been planned for this very special month are a great way for our community to celebrate the special places and people that have made Martin County so unique.”

Moreover, the article mentions (in part), “It is the Martin County Historic Preservation Board’s (HPB) ninth year of coordinating Historic Preservation Month events on behalf of the Commission.  According to HPB member, Joette Lorion Rice, who has been there for all of them, “It was the Board’s hope when we launched the first celebration 9 years ago, that public education about our historic treasures would help a preservation ethic take root in Martin County.  The 2017 Schedule of Events, that lists dozens of activities planned by a diversity of groups, is proof that a preservation ethic has, indeed, taken root.”

The festivities kicked-off on May 1 at the Stuart Heritage Museum that is housed in the historic Stuart Feed Store (1901).  Preservationists gathered to celebrate Historic Preservation Month and honor the 2017 Preservationist of the Year, Mary Walton Jones, the Museum’s Executive Director.  After the ceremony, the Crary House (1925) next door (now the offices of Congressman Brian Mast) was open with local author Rick Crary on hand to share its history.

Other activities include or will include: tours of the historic Seminole Inn (1926); tours of the Mansion at Tuckahoe (1938); a rededication of the historical marker at the House of Refuge (1876); a House of Refuge Keepers Grave Marker Placement Ceremony; an archaeological tour of prehistoric Mount Elizabeth; and Stuart Heritage Day hosted by the City of Stuart and Stuart Heritage Museum.  The Captain Henry Sewall House (circa 1889) will be open each Wednesday with historian Sandra Thurlow on hand to tell its story.

According to Nathaniel Osborn, Chair of the Martin County Historic Preservation Board, “Historic Preservation Month is a great way to celebrate the rich history that contributes to our sense of place here in Martin County.  Our Board invites Martin County residents to join us as we commemorate this very special month along with the rest of the country.”  For more information, or a detailed Schedule of Events, contact: 772-221-1329 or visit the County website.
