There is a reason why we ask our sellers for testimonials in South Florida!

It is not by accident that we often ask our sellers to provide a testimonial (if he or she feels comfortable).  This type of “word-of-mouth” recommendation is actually backed by sound science!

We did a little research about the science behind the testimonial and how the science of social proof actually works.  In this research, we ran across and interesting article by Ed Hallen, posted to Buffer Social, where Hallen mentions, “A lot of things go into a person’s decision to purchase a product, and social proof is certainly one of those important factors.  Studies show that 70% of consumers say they look at product reviews before making a purchase, and product reviews are 12x more trusted than product descriptions from manufacturers.”

Hallen notes the definition of social proof as, “Social proof is the concept that people will conform to the actions of others under the assumption that those actions are reflective of the correct behavior.  Thanks to social media, social proof has gained steam over the past couple of years, but in truth it’s been around for a while in marketing.”

Hallen adds the five principles as expert proof, celebrity proof, user proof, wisdom of the crowd, and wisdom of your friends as the psychological factors involved in making a decision to buy (or hire).

Moreover, we found an article written by Aileen Lee, on TechCrunch.com® that expands on this theory, “In the age of the social web, social proof is the new marketing.  If you have a great product (or service) waiting to be discovered, figure out how to build social proof around it by putting it in front of the right early influencers.  And, engineer your product (or service) to share the love.  Social proof is the best way for new users to learn why your product (or service) is great, and to remind existing users why they made a smart choice.”
