One tank trip to take a walk on the wild side in South Florida!

Whether you are looking to make South Florida your permanent home, or are planning a seasonal residency; tourists, snowbirds, and spring-breakers love to visit the amazing wildlife sanctuaries near our coastal communities in St. Lucie, Martin and Palm Beach counties. On only one tank of gas, you too might take a walk on the “wild side” in South Florida!

Most visitors are aware of the wildly popular Lion Country Safari in Palm Beach County, yet; there are several other locales that are open to the public (on a limited basis).  Make sure to call ahead for more information.

Save the Chimps: Save the Chimps is a non-profit organization dedicated to providing permanent sanctuary for the lifelong care of chimpanzees rescued from research laboratories, the entertainment industry, and the pet trade.  Established in 1997, the history of this amazing organization has recently been published in Opening Doors: Carole Noon and Her Dream to Save the Chimps.  View the History and learn about Carole Noon online or order this book to learn about the entire journey. Every day the staff and volunteers of Save the Chimps provide care to more than 250 chimpanzees.  Like us in so many ways, these individuals have personalities and unique experiences that make them each very special.  The staff hopes that you will get to know some of them through our Meet the Chimps pages and continue to receive updates in our regular email updates.

The National Elephant Center: The National Elephant Center is a 225-acre home for elephants with the potential to expand in the future.  They provide short-term and long-term care for North American elephants in support of the accredited zoo population and for the welfare of elephants in need.  Located in Fellsmere, Florida, The Center provides flexible habitats for both African and Asian bull (male) elephants, herds and social groupings.  The Center is currently home to two African elephants, consisting of one female and one male.  The group arrived in May 2013, and spends their days foraging, swimming, and interacting together.

Busch Wildlife Sanctuary: “….more than just a place to see animals, it’s a real wildlife adventure!”  The Sanctuary offers visitors a one-of-a-kind opportunity to learn about Florida’s wildlife and natural environments.  This unique refuge combines a nature center with a wildlife hospital.  Nature trails lead visitors through pine flat woods, oak hammocks, and cypress wetlands.  Along the trails are wildlife habitats exhibiting a variety of native animals from eagles to panthers, crocodiles, foxes, snakes, bears, and more.  Bring the whole family for a real wild experience.

McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary: This year, McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary has treated hundreds of native animals that were sick or injured.  Everything from foxes to bobcats, sand hill cranes to pelicans, hawks, owls, and many others have received veterinarian care by their staff and then were released back into the wild.  Many of the exotic animals have been donated to them by wildlife officers who confiscated these innocent creatures from the previous owners because of neglect, abuse, or illegal possession.  Some were pets that owners could no longer care for and felt McCarthy’s Wildlife Sanctuary would provide the animals a safe haven.

The South Florida climate is just perfect for wildlife and for you too!  Share your experiences in the comment section on our blog!
