Florida Relocation Guide | Buying a Home in Florida

Relocating to Florida

Florida is one of the top destinations for both domestic and international buyers – and for good reason. Florida offers great weather year-round, a friendly business & tax climate, outdoor activities like boating & golfing, incredible beaches, a booming housing market and more.

When planning a relocation to Florida, you have more to consider than Atlantic vs. Gulf Coast beaches and North vs. South. The following are a few items to help with your Florida relocation plans.

Florida’s Tropical Weather & Active Outdoor Lifestyle

They don’t call it the Sunshine State for nothing. Florida’s balmy weather averages lows of 55 and highs in the 80s, with warmer weather mostly around the southern edges of the peninsula and the Treasure Coast and Palm Beach areas. Where you have sun and surf, you have beaches — like the ones that make Florida an annual destination for vacationers, snowbirds and relocators alike.

Since Floridians enjoy tropical weather year-round, residents can enjoy their favorite outdoor activities – including fishing, golf, tennis and more. Home of the PGA Tour’s Honda Classic, Palm Beach county has over 40 public golf courses – from executive to championship and premier golf resorts including The Breakers, The Boca Raton Resort & Club and the PGA National Resort & Spa.

Florida’s Favorable Economic Climate

Florida has one of the lowest tax burdens in the country. Residents save on individual income tax – Florida is one of only seven states that does not tax individual wage income. Florida has a 6% sales tax – and counties can impose additional surtaxes (Martin and Palm Beach counties don’t have a surtax; St. Lucie county levies a .5% surtax). Property taxes are based on the just or fair market value of the property. If the property is the taxpayer’s primary residence, the homeowner may be eligible for the $50,000 homestead exemption. Contact your realtor for a full list of exemptions and property tax information.

Florida is also business friendly. Florida was named 2nd Best State for Business 2012 by CEOs and business leaders rated states based on several areas, including tax and regulation, quality of workforce and living environment.

Recovering Housing Market

Florida’s housing market shows signs of a solid recovery. According to, “Florida’s housing market wrapped up 2012 with more closed sales, higher pending sales, higher median prices and a reduced inventory of homes for sale compared to the year before, according to the latest housing data released by Florida Realtors®.”

The upward trend continues in 2013. Florida Realtors President Dean Asher states, “These positive fundamentals in the housing sector continue to attract potential homeowners and investors; however, they’re facing a limited inventory of available for-sale homes in many areas. Florida’s economy is growing, more jobs are being created and mortgage interest rates probably will stay favorably low for some time – which will help drive the housing market forward in 2013.”

Planning Retirement in Florida

Florida has long been a retirement haven for seniors across the country, for its warm weather, lower cost of living and plethora of active retirement communities. Whether you are looking for a home, condo, vacation home or planned community, Florida offers many options to finding the best location for your retirement lifestyle.
